Whitby is an ancient port with a long history; it is popular with tourists all year round because of its pretty architecture, independent shops and wide range of local festivals. It also has sandy beaches, with donkey rides and rock pools, and not to mention some of the best fish and chips in the world! Its narrow medieval streets are dotted with boutiques, shops, pubs and fish restaurants.
The cobbled Church Street takes you to the foot of the famous 199 steps leading from the town to St Mary’s Church and the Abbey Headland and Visitor Centre. The Whalebone Arch and bronze statue commemorating Whitby’s most famous explorer, Captain James Cook, stand proudly on the West Cliff, facing directly across the harbour to the Abbey.
Whitby forms part of the North York Moors National Park and is the perfect location for keen walkers. The Moors are a special place, where history and nature have combined to provide an amazingly vibrant landscape with woodland and moorland, rich in heritage and wildlife.
While staying in Whitby a visit to the coastal town of Robin Hood’s Bay is recommended, a picturesque old fishing village on the Heritage Coast of the North York Moors with narrow, twisting cobbled streets and alleyways. Staithes and Runswick Bay are also well worth a visit.
