Description
Tafarn Trip is a charming Grade II-listed former tavern dating back to around 1630, occupying an enviable lakeside position on the banks of Llyn Mair in the heart of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. Surrounded by ancient oak woodland, part of a rare temperate rainforest habitat, this characterful cottage offers a peaceful retreat steeped in history and natural beauty.
Step through the impressive oak front door and into the sitting room, where a woodburning stove sits within the original inglenook fireplace, perfect for relaxing after a day exploring the surrounding countryside. Across the hallway, the well-equipped kitchen/diner combines traditional charm with modern convenience, offering a freestanding oven and hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and dining space for enjoying meals together. A contemporary ground-floor shower room with a walk-in shower, basin, heated towel rail and WC adds further convenience.
Outside, the enclosed front garden has been established as a wildflower meadow, attracting a variety of birds, insects and local wildlife. Garden furniture provides a wonderful spot to sit and enjoy the tranquil surroundings, while the garden extends down towards the shores of Llyn Mair. Guests can watch the famous Ffestiniog Railway steam trains pass through the landscape, enjoy the peaceful waterside setting, or take advantage of the small rowing boat available for guest use. As the property lies within a designated Dark Sky area, clear evenings offer exceptional opportunities for stargazing, with the Milky Way often visible overhead. Please note that the lake is unfenced and care should be taken at all times.
The first floor is accessed via the property's original stone staircase and offers three bedrooms comprising two doubles and one single room. The family bathroom features a bath, basin and WC, with access through the single bedroom, making this room particularly suited to families or close groups. Original timber panelling and historic details throughout the upper floor continue the property's unique character and charm.
The cottage enjoys a fantastic location for exploring some of North Wales' most spectacular scenery. Extensive woodland walks can be accessed directly from the doorstep, leading to nearby lakes including Llyn Hafod y Llyn, a popular spot for wild swimming. The mountains of the Moelwyns and Rhinogs provide excellent walking opportunities, while Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is within easy driving distance. The historic Ffestiniog Railway can be boarded at nearby Tan-y-Bwlch station, which is within walking distance of the cottage.
A little further afield, guests can spend days exploring the beautiful beaches at Harlech and Borth-y-Gest, visit the world-famous Italianate village of Portmeirion, or discover the fascinating underground world of the Llechwedd Slate Caverns in Blaenau Ffestiniog. Harlech Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, also makes for an excellent day out. After a day of adventure, two welcoming local pubs, The Grapes and The Oakeley Arms, can be reached on foot and offer hearty food and refreshments in a traditional Welsh setting.
Please note that the property does not have a TV, welcomes no pets and is not suitable for children under eight years of age due to the unfenced lake. Owing to the historic nature of the building and its layout, it may also be unsuitable for guests with limited mobility.
