Description
Stay in the Grade II listed Georgian stately hall, set within picturesque grounds and gardens in the charming village of Hickleton, South Yorkshire.
Built in 1748, Hickleton Hall has a rich and fascinating history. It served as a headquarters during the Second World War, later becoming a girls’ boarding school in the late 1940s, and has undergone extensive refurbishment to restore it to its former glory. Finest Retreats is delighted to offer a spacious and character-filled apartment within Hickleton Hall, accommodating up to nine guests, with access to part of the 17 acres of gardens and woodland.
Step back in time as you drive up the sweeping driveway and take in the breathtaking period property. With ample parking and a private entrance on the ground floor, you’ll be welcomed into the elegant chapel bedroom, where stunning sky views through the glass ceiling provide beautiful natural light. Enjoy discovering the hall’s historical charm, with original paintings, tapestries, and echoes of a bygone era.
Descending to the lower ground floor, you’ll find two king-size bedrooms and a separate bathroom with a shower. A wide, open corridor leads to a diner/kitchenette, equipped with a microwave, kettle, and coffee machine - perfect for preparing light meals during your stay.
The lounge/games room provides an ideal space for family gatherings, featuring a piano, pool table, smart TV, and Wi-Fi. Adjacent to this space, you’ll find the fourth bedroom, complete with a majestic king-size four-poster bed and elegant period furnishings.
Previously featured as a filming location for numerous TV programs and paranormal documentaries, Hickleton Hall is a renowned part of Doncaster’s history.

We had a fantastic weekend at Hickleton Hall! The setting is breathtaking — a grand, historic property full of charm, character, and just the right amount of spooky atmosphere (or not!). We stayed in the basement apartment, which was spacious, comfortable, and ideal for our group of six. Ordering food and arranging taxis was really easy — we used Uber Eats and local taxi firms without any trouble. The location felt peaceful and remote but still really well connected. One tip: make sure you’ve give clear directions to deliveries to get in, as the property is large and the entrance to the location isn’t immediately obvious on without instructions. The grounds are lovely, the host was helpful and responsive, and the whole weekend felt special. A unique, memorable place to stay — we’d definitely return.

The house and grounds are impressive, and clearly there's something glorious planned for the future here. It was great to have the grounds for our kids to run around and play in.

It's strange to rent a four bedroom holiday rental that has a kitchen that is so under-equipped. We took heed of the property description, and took *all* our own stuff, and survived fine. But the fridge is small, and the freezer is just an ice compartment. No hob. No oven. Future plans to include a proper kitchen would be a total game changer here.
Then there's the decor. Okay, personal preference granted, but having a bunch of pictures of demons leering over children wasn't a particularly welcoming feel for our family holiday. The flat generally feels poorly lit, a bit dingy, and possibly a bit creepy - even though it's been renovated to a good standard. There's one bathroom - which is okay if not ideal. |

Beautiful property and gardens. Very clean throughout and very nice touch with the Prosecco and milk in the fridge .
Just for info the kitchen does have an airfryer ( I took my own plus a grill) -it is quite dark as other reviews have mentioned so suggest taking a couple of portable lights. The garden patio has a large dining table and seating for approx 8 ( cushions can be found in the cupboard in the dining room). The key box to enter is not on the gate ( which were the instructions we received) and can be found on the archway to the right of the property ( as you stand facing it). The local community run pub ( Hickleton Village Hall and Club) was a big hit- the locals were very welcoming and the price of drinks very reasonable . The vast gardens are idyllic and our dog loved every minute of exploration- we had the whole place to ourselves -the peace and quiet is bliss. We did have deliveries from Tesco , Just Eat and Uber eats- we had to meet them at the gate and escort to the premises and off again .( security cameras etc around the whole estate which is very comforting) |

One bathroom between 7 of us was a tad challenging and ideally en suites or a 2nd bathroom would be a great addition ( I appreciate the challenges this may present as a grade listed building ).
Additional lighting in the kitchen would be good

The kitchen/diner was very dark at all times, even in the day. Difficult to see anything to prepare food or to tidy. A couple of extra lights would make the world of difference. One bathroom between all of us was also a bit of a pain. As was the lack of a hob (I would suggest being explicit that there isn’t one in the listing). It made things very difficult with trying to cater for a 3 year old.

Hi Natasha, thankyou so much for your lovely review! I am pleased to hear that you found Hickleton Hall impressive. Thankyou for your feedback regarding the lighting, this has now been rectified. And in regard to the kitchen, there is a plan to build a full kitchen and to make more bedrooms and bathrooms. Maybe once these are complete you can come and stay at Hickleton again!
